Street Legal | Discovering Bob Dylan, Ep. 19
Переглядів 2,1 тис.7 годин тому
The tables have finally turned between Joe and Dylan. Just what that means... you'll have to watch and find out. Street Legal, Bob Dylan's 18th studio album was a pretty big change for Bob's sound and some people were upset by it. Critics were mixed: Robert Christgau gave it a C and said that "This divorcé sounds overripe, too in love with his own self-generated misery to break through the lead...

Street Legal is the most underrated album in his catalog in my opinion. Very emotional, direct and powerful. Besides Blonde on Blonde these are my favorite Dylan vocals ever. I love it. Is Your Love in Vain? is one of my favorite Dylan songs ever and Changing of the Guard is hands down one of his best. I think the background music adds a lot to the album. Dylan's best work is where he is at his most direct and emotional - Blonde on Blonde, Blood on the Tracks, Highway 61, Street Legal, Infidels, Time out of Mind. I had a good feeling Joe would like this album but still can't believe he didn't like Blood on the Tracks but I am not shocked lol.

Some good songs hampered by busy arrangements. Mix out most of the backing vocals and saxes and it might go from a good to great record. I do like it more now than when it first came out; I'm hoping for a Bootleg series of demos without the "tasty" playing. The Slow Train Coming episode should be interesting. "On the slow train time does not interfere and at the Arabian crossing waits..."

These lists are always fun to argue about, but I can't take them too seriously. Glad to see Mahmoud Ahmed on the list, though. To this day the best concert I've ever seen was Ahmed, Alemayehu Eshete and Getatchew Mekurya, backed by The Ex, at Damrosch Park in NYC. Also happy to see a bunch of Spiritual Jazz mentioned; Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders get regular spins here.

I wouldn't consider Paste hipster. I haven't followed it in a long time, but I remember it as being bland indie coverage leaning toward folky Americana. From this list though, there's not anyhing that really sets them apart from any other boring mainstream listicles other than a handful of outliers. Funny how the popular opinions of double albums with filler evolve over time, and now Stevie Wonder's, arguably only fourth best album, is now in vogue, whereas many of these didn't even make the list - Electric Ladyland, White Album, Quadrophenia, London Calling, Exile on Main Street, etc.

I think every Bob Marley/ Wailers album from their formal debut in 1973 to their final album in 1980 can be reasonably rated at 4 stars minimum. From freedom fighters to investment bankers, everyone sings their songs to this day. Easily should’ve been included here.

I gotta agree with Jason on this one. The Boston album, somehow, manages to be even worse than the Feldman one. But it's right down to the microscopic wire. The Boston album should be erased from the entire multi-verse. And even that might not be enough to repair the damage it's done to reality.

Street Legal is not so great, but once again, Joe loves it? Anyone, who knows real music knows Blood on the Tracks and Desire are Bob's best 70s albums and I also like New Morning, as well; the rest of the 70s stuff, not so much! I do actually like Slow Train: yes the lyrics aren't the best, but the Production is excellent!

There’s nothing good about the music on Blood on the Tracks. You Dylan apologists can make any excuses you want but you’re so up his butt that you’ll say anything he does is beyond reproach… is what I would have said about BoTT before. Now I’ll just say “I don’t get it.” - Joe

    • @dtchinacat3973

@TastesLikeMusic the exact opposite! I'm definitely not up Bob's Ass, I don't even like him as a human being. Actully, I don't like most of his albums, but the few I like, I LOVE! I do like pretty much all of his 60s especially, Bringing it all Back Home! But my absolute favorite is Blood on the Tracks: Lyrics are great, music style is great and production great, even the little squeaks and pops of the guitar strings helps make each song PERFECT! The only song that (although I like it) I feel doesn't fit the album would be Idiot Wind? Anyway. Even with that it's still a pretty PERFECT Album! In fact, it's one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES!

Maybe the best and worst album together ? Not their best album put it that way. Some good songs on it though. Discovery in 1979. It feels like they cruised a little bit on that particular album. However I never really heard an album by this group that wasn't something special. Even this album ain't too bad at all. Just comparing it to other albums though maybe not quite the same standard......

I think Joe listened to the same album I did. I love this coming at the end of the magnificent trio starting with BOTT. I love this one but would like to hear it with the backing vocals mixed out, just to hear it, but I really like this one. Surely we see the dissolution of Dylan's life over this period (could this be why Dylan doesn't like the arrangements and mix - he's had everything blow up, why not the sound?) So why was everyone surprised when Slow Train Coming came out. We can't live much less thrive living with constant chaos. Can't wait for the review, STC is one of my favorites but will leave the story for that one. Dylan, you gently chided me for not letting Bob be Bob in the late 60's-early 70's era and understand the context of the time issued. And I appreciated the comments and insight then. I think given Bob's state of mind at the time, I think this recording perfectly captures this. But, I could be wrong. I continue to love this series, you guys did a great job with this record. Joe, Dylan, thanks for your efforts. It has been well worth it.

All three spend more time talking about why they don’t liked a song or album than why they liked. That’s what’s wrong with how people talk about art. Music is subjective, but when you waste so much time tearing it down, what is the point? Even when you compliment, it’s in a condescending way. People tear down art they have no ability to make, instead appreciating or just saying “it wasn’t for me”, they need to spend 5 minutes saying that the writing is lame, the production is flat. It’s annoying.
