Street Legal | Discovering Bob Dylan, Ep. 19
Переглядів 2,4 тис.День тому
The tables have finally turned between Joe and Dylan. Just what that means... you'll have to watch and find out. Street Legal, Bob Dylan's 18th studio album was a pretty big change for Bob's sound and some people were upset by it. Critics were mixed: Robert Christgau gave it a C and said that "This divorcé sounds overripe, too in love with his own self-generated misery to break through the lead...

There are different levels of disappointment. For me the one that has always stood alone on the mountaintop is Yes/Topographic Oceans. Following what is arguably the greatest prog album of all time Close to the Edge. I know some revisionists have tried to defend it, but I don't buy their reasoning. I've listened to it a few times and I find it impenetrable and indulgent nonsense. I understand Rick Wakeman was so disgusted with it he left the band. Yes went on to a successful career but I believe that's mostly due to the excellence of their early records.

Kanye West? No. Just crap. I agree with the other choices. My Choices would be : Pink Floyd - DSOTM, Wish you were here, Animals; Supertramp - Crime of the century, Crisis? What crisis?, Even in the quietest moments. Dire Straits - Idem, Communiqué, Making movies. Steely Dan - can't buy a thrill, Countdown to ecstasy, Pretzel Logic. Pixies - Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova. Led Zeppelin - II, III, IV. Yes - Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from topographic oceans. Jethro Tull -Benefit, Aqualung, Thick as a brick. XTC - Drums and Wires, Black Sea, English Settlement.

Props to Dylan S for defending Bob's blues roots, since I also see many fans pooh-poohing on many of his more blues-oriented tracks. I am saddened to see blues as a genre seemingly taking a nose dive in the much of the online music nerd community (UA-cam, forums, etc). I've heard so many criticisms of the blues--the albums are same-y, too much guitar noodling, the British blues boom cats of the 60s were culture vultures, and other opinions I don't agree with. I don't see too many fans listing blues artists among their favorites, raving about new blues album acquisitions, etc. The blues genre was such a big part of my musical journey that it's hard to see it drop in stature but this is the perception I've gotten, especially in an era where a lot of the music media are bumping African American musicians way up in their album rankings compared to 20 years ago. As for Blood on the Tracks, as a big Bob fan I don't have it near the top of my rankings. I like it a lot and appreciate it as a piece of art, but I find myself reaching for more easygoing Dylan such as New Morning much more often. For me it is Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts that keeps it from elite status because that is a 9 minute--I don't want to say slog because that is too harsh but having that right in the middle of the album knocks it down a peg for me. If it was stuck somewhere less obtrusive, like Murder Most Foul (which also isn't a favorite), I might be more forgiving. Great episode in this series, as always. And Dylan S, don't go easy on Joe--I'd love to see you eventually get to ALL of the Bootleg Series and the live albums. Kids schmids.

For me Desire is only bettered by Blood as the greatest album of all but surprisingly it seems to be a very polarising amongst Dylan fans. I heard an interview with Rivera a few years back and the way she tells it is she was walking down the street carrying her violin case when a car pull up next to her and the driver said “do you play that?” It was Dylan. She told him she did and he said “get in” and because she knew who he was she did. They went off to a studio and took it from there. Even if it isn’t true it’s a cool story.

Yeah Black Sabbath is a lot more than just a “metal” band. Ozzy himself loves The Beatles and they put many influences into their music. Just as many metal fans can be stubborn, critics and the general public can be stubborn about metal as well. Many don’t seem to understand how deep the band went and just how groundbreaking they were.

Gritty, emotional and powerful and it reflected the dark mood the country was in after the tragic loss of JFK. Hurricane had to be recorded twice. After Columbia Records lawyers read the lyrics they insisted the lyrics be changed in a few spots to avoid potential lawsuits. One of the changes was originally " I was only robbing the bodies" to "I was only robbing the register. Instead of simply punching in a few vocals with the changed lyrics Bob had a new session and recorded it again from scratch I love the cymbal crashes on Hurricane. It gets you attention and makes you pat attention again to follow the story.
